REQUIRED FRESHMAN CLASS          
Students will read a variety of types of literature, including fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry, and will develop the skills necessary to interpret what they read. They will also develop their writing skills as they work on a variety of composition modes. In addition, students will be expected to give spoken presentations and participate in class discussions.

ENG200 - ELL Seminar

Students will focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills by participating in class discussions, learning non-fiction reading strategies and practicing content specific vocabulary.

Students will read a variety of types of literature, including fiction, drama, and poetry, and will develop the skills necessary to interpret what they read. They will also develop their writing skills as they work on a variety of composition modes. In addition, students will be expected to participate in class discussions. This class will include an extra emphasis on skills needed for the required standardized tests. This class is for emergent and progressing language learners.

The Language and Literature I Honors class is for students who are motivated to take an English course that is academically rigorous and challenging. All students in this class will be expected to perform at high academic levels. Students will read a variety of types of literature, including fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry, and work on developing complex and in-depth interpretations of what they read. They will also work to refine their writing skills as they utilize a variety of composition modes. In addition, students will be expected to give spoken presentations and participate meaningfully in class discussions. This course will help prepare students for other academically challenging language arts classes, including Language and Literature II Honors and AP English.

ENG201 - Language & Literature II

REQUIRED SOPHOMORE CLASS
Students will read a variety of world literature from various regions and time periods, including myths, poems, short stories, nonfiction, and other works, and will continue developing skills to interpret and analyze what they read. Students will build on their writing skills as they work on a variety of composition modes. In addition, students will be expected to give spoken presentations and participate in class discussions.

ENG211 - Language & Literature II - Honors

The Language and Literature II Honors class is for students who are ready for an English course that is academically rigorous and challenging. All students in this class will be expected to perform at high academic levels. The class will focus on world literature, and students will read a variety of types of literature from various regions and time periods, including myths, poems, short stories, novels, and other works. Students will work on developing complex and in-depth interpretations of what they read, and also work on refining their writing skills. In addition, students will be expected to give spoken presentations and participate meaningfully in class discussions. This course will help prepare students for other academically challenging language arts classes, including AP English.

ENG301 - Language & Literature III

REQUIRED JUNIOR CLASS    
In this two-trimester course, students will read a variety of American Literature. Students will read from different literary types, including fiction, drama, poetry, and nonfiction. Students learn about literary terms, which will enable them to analyze a variety of composition modes. Students will have the opportunities to work on their writing skills, and communication skills will be developed through class participation.

ENG311 - Advanced Composition and Literature

2 Trimesters

Prerequisites - Successful completion of Honors Language and Literature II or teacher recommendation.

NOTE: Juniors may take this class in place of Language & Literature III. This course is recommended for students who plan to take AP English.
This course targets advanced college-bound juniors. Students will develop skills in writing for various purposes. Model essays are read and analyzed for elements specific to rhetorical mode.  Students must produce multiple essays, taking the essays through all phases of the writing process. They will also practice the skills of the analytical process in the consideration of the formal elements of fiction, reading and writing about several novels. Students will work on their public speaking skills through classroom presentations.

ENG401 - Language & Literature IV

Graduation Credit: English

2 Trimesters

Prerequisites - Successful completion of Language and Literature III or equivalent.

REQUIRED SENIOR CLASS    
Language & Literature IV is designed to help students with the research paper and speaking aspects of their Senior Projects and to facilitate the continued development of literary analysis and writing skills. During the course, students will work on writing a research paper using MLA format and style. They will also work on their speaking skills, which will be needed for presenting their Senior Projects in the spring. Throughout the course, students will read and analyze a variety of types of literature and work on improving their writing abilities.

ENG421 - AP: English Literature and Composition

Graduation Credit: English

2 Trimesters

Prerequisites - C or better in Advanced Composition & Literature or teacher permission.

NOTE: Seniors may take this class in place of Language & Literature IV.  Students enrolled in this course may take the AP exam in May at a cost of approximately $95. Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify. Possible college credit with exam passage can be earned.
Students in AP English will actively discuss works which require careful, deliberate reading. The approach to analyzing and interpreting these works will involve learning how to make careful observations of textual detail and establishing connections among observations. Students will draw from those connections a series of inferences leading to conclusions about the work’s meaning and value. Writing will focus on increasing the student’s ability to explain clearly, cogently, and even elegantly what they understand about literary works and why they interpret them as they do. The AP English Literature and Composition course is a college-level English course that is demanding, rigorous, and challenging and should only be taken by students who enjoy reading and writing. Summer reading may be required.
